Dorchester prison under lockdown after assault

The Dorchester penitentiary is under lockdown after an inmate was assaulted.

The lockdown began on Friday after the assault, according to a news release from the Correctional Service Canada.

The lockdown will let staff search the medium security prison to “ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates,” the release said.

Visits will resume when the search is done and the lockdown is lifted, and the prison will open back up to normal operations once staff determine it is safe.

The prison says it’s committed to preventing contraband from entering the facility, and they work with police to investigate when someone tries to bring contraband into the prison.
