Program partnering nurses with pregnant people expanding

A partnership that pairs a nurse with a pregnant person for free home visits, is expanding.

Nova Scotia Health says the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) program is now accepting referrals in Northern and Western zones.

A specially trained Public Health nurse will visit you at home while you are pregnant with your first child if you could benefit from more support.

Visits start early in the pregnancy and will last until your child turns two.

Health Minister Michelle Thompson says the program helps with isolation by providing continued care and a safe space to talk.

“These specialized nurses can be a welcome addition to a new parent’s support system, helping them identify and achieve personal and parenting goals, and ensuring the next generation gets a healthy start.”

The health authority says it is designed to help make sure children grow and develop in a positive way and set families on a path for a healthy and happy life.

The program launched in the Eastern Zone a little under a year ago with more than half of those eligible, who signed up, resulting in close to 200 home visits.

Contact Public Health to sign up or you can get a referral by your doctor, community organization or school-based program.
