N.S. considering intimate partner violence education in schools, says minister

The province is planning to bring intimate partner violence education into the school curriculum.

Seven people in Nova Scotia have been murdered as a result of intimate partner violence since October.

Education Minister Brendan Maguire says his department has a responsibility on this issue.

“We need to teach our children young that this is not acceptable,” Maguire told reporters after a cabinet meeting last week.

Several not-profit groups and advocates have called for better education, related to health relationships and gender-based violence, to help prevent violence.

He didn’t say how education might be added to schools.

But he said he was meeting with the Regional Education Centres to discuss what to do.
