N.S. now training 4 doctors from abroad to take on 2,600 patients

If you are one of the thousands waiting for a family physician, the province says four doctors from abroad are now getting trained to practice here in Nova Scotia.

The province says The Physician Assessment Centre of Excellence and its clinic are now open.

It fast tracks the process for international doctors to get licensed, while being supervised by a team of Nova Scotia doctors.

In just a few months, they will take on 2,600 patients from the doctor waitlist.

“We know there are many talented and in-demand internationally trained doctors who are eager to practice primary care medicine in our beautiful province. This assessment centre is the first of its kind in North America, and it will get these doctors seeing patients much faster than before while providing the quality-of-care Nova Scotians expect,” said Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness.

The centre takes over from Dalhousie University’s Practice Ready Assessment Program, which did similar work and since 2019 that issued 39 licences in about 18 months.

Over time the centre will accept 6,500 patients.
