The tolls are officially off for the Macdonald bridge in Halifax.
The power has been turned off to the booths for the Macdonald bridge. Workers are preparing for when the booths will be torn down next week, according to Steven Proctor, spokesperson for Halifax Harbour Bridges.
With power off, crews can work lane by lane, removing coin machines and computers without disrupting traffic, he said. The tolls will not be turned back on again.
However, tolls are still active for the MacKay bridge.
The Macdonald bridge is set to close at 7 p.m. on Friday until Monday at 5:30 a.m. for the booths to be removed. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use it, but they will share the same lane.
It will be closed again the following weekend, from March 21 at 7 p.m. to March 24 at 5:30 a.m.
Proctor previously told our newsroom that the MacKay toll removal would happen in two phases, with weekend closures starting in a few weeks.
Correction: A previous version of this story said tolls were off for both bridges. In fact, tolls are only off for the Macdonald bridge.
