Mark Carney visits Halifax on campaign trail

Mark Carney started the second day of his election campaign in Halifax at the Irving Shipyard, where he promised to increase military spending if he becomes prime minister.

The Liberal leader also focused on some local issues, saying his government would fight for fishers and their livelihood, while the U.S. threatens tariffs on Canadian exports and China has already imposed duties on seafood from Canada.

“We’re going to do everything we can to support the fishery through this period and for the medium term,” Carney told reporters on Tuesday.

He said he met with the federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to discuss fishing on Sunday, and it was a big issue when he met with all of the country’s premiers on Friday, as well.

He added that the government has people negotiating with both China and the U.S. to deal with these tariff threats.

The campaign announcement focused on increasing funding to the Canadian Armed Forces.

The feds also recently announced an $8 billion contract for the Halifax Shipyard for 3 new warships.

Carney also touched on how to solve the housing crisis in the province. He said he believes the Housing Accelerator Fund has helped get homes built, and that removing the federal sales tax for first-time home buyers would make it easier for people to own their own houses.

“We need to build affordable housing at a scale we haven’t seen since the Second World War. My government is going to do that.”
