The province is moving forward with fracking.
This despite Mi’kmaw chiefs speaking out against the exploration of natural gas.
Nova Scotia does have a duty to consult on the issue, they passed legislation during the last session.
Energy minister Trevor Boudreau says they’ll consult with the chiefs on a project-by-project basis.
“We believe that natural gas extraction can be done in a safe and appropriate way. We believe we can do it, and that consultation can happen in an appropriate way to see these things through,” Boudreau told reporters after cabinet Thursday.
He says we have significant natural gas underneath our feet, and they’re excited for opportunities.
In a March 28 release, the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs said they’ve always opposed fracking, and there’s been no meaningful conversations on the issue.
