I was around 9 or 10 when I first discovered Sea Monkeys! I thought they were the coolest things. They came in a little plastic tank and sprang to life when you added water…it was like magic!
After doing some research, I found out they’ve actually been around for decades.
First of all, they’re not monkeys at all—obviously. They’re tiny sea creatures called brine shrimp. Sea Monkeys first hit the market in the early 1960s and were mostly advertised in comic books back in the day.
The kit usually came with a few small packets and a clear plastic tank. Each packet had a specific purpose:
- Water Purifier: This was the first packet you added to clean the water and prepare it for the shrimp.
- Instant Life Eggs: This second packet contained the brine shrimp eggs, which would hatch shortly after being added.
- Growth Food: A third packet was included to feed your new aquatic pets and help them grow.
Some deluxe kits even came with a magnifying glass built into the tank lid, a feeding spoon, or a tiny air pump to oxygenate the water. The packaging was always colorful and full of wild promises—like training your Sea Monkeys or watching them do tricks (spoiler: they mostly just floated around and did nothing).
