More access to mental health, social services for young people in N.S.

More access for young people in Halifax and Sydney to immediate mental health and social services.

The province has opened two new integrated youth services sites that offer walk-in support to those aged 12 to 25 for things like counselling, peer support, life skills group and mental health services.

In addition to that there is also help with employment, education and training.

In a news release Tuesday, Brian Comer, Minister of Addictions and Mental Health says, it’s an exciting day.

“Youth in Halifax and Sydney now have more access to safe spaces where they can get the help and support they need,” says Comer. “It’s important that young people and their families have a comfortable place to access services.”

The new sites are:

– Anchor Youth Space Halifax, 2269 Gottingen St., led by YMCA Greater Halifax/Dartmouth
– Anchor Youth Space Sydney, 37 Nepean St., led by New Dawn Enterprises

Other community partners include ONE North End, Hope Blooms and North End Community Health Centre in Halifax and Undercurrent Youth Society, Cape Breton Youth Project and BGC Cape Breton in Sydney.

There are five more integrated youth services sites planned to open in Nova Scotia by 2027 in Bridgewater, Eskasoni, Halifax, New Glasgow and Yarmouth.
