Man charged in Barrington Lake wildfire to be sentenced October 16

A man will be sentenced next month for his role in Nova Scotia’s largest wildfire.

Dalton Clark Stewart of Villagedale, Shelburne County will find out his sentence in Shelburne Provincial Court in Barrington on October 16.

He pleaded guilty to one charge under the Forests Act nearly a year ago.

The charge was for failing to take reasonable effort to prevent the spread of a fire.

The Barrington Lake blaze destroyed dozens of homes and structures in May and June of 2023.

Stewart was originally charged with three counts under the Act in January, 2024.

In court Thursday morning, the Crown and defense agreed that the sentencing should only take about a half hour.

Originally, a full day had been set aside.
