A big clean-up of McNutt’s Island off Shelburne County could take years.
But Scotian Shores say they have to start somewhere.
They’ve started with a group travelling a half-hour by boat to the island daily until Friday.
Organizer Angela Riley says she’s noticed thousands of old lobster traps in the area.
“Over the last 40-50 years, these traps have built up, along with other debris. It’s just really hard to get to, and it can be rough out there,” said Riley.
She says there are large rocks and grassy trails on the island, and you’ll have to have your sea legs.
Riley notes that fishers have done a better job in holding onto their traps.
“They aren’t out there cutting their traps off anymore, they are doing better and things have changed. But all this debris is still there, and it looks bad on the fishing industry, which powers our province. So we have to clean it up.”
She thanks the fishers who are stepping up to help, even though the decades’ old mess is not theirs.
The group will leave Gunning Cove daily around 9 a.m, and return around 2 p.m.
