The official opposition says Nova Scotia needs more housing faster.
The NDP tabled legislation last week at the legislature but they will discuss it again at the spring session.
Claudia Chender said the short sitting at the house means they did not cover some topics, like affordability and housing.
Chender added that, since the Houston government was elected, it is now more expensive to live in Halifax than Toronto.
She is likely referring to numbers from Statistics Canada, analyzed and reported by the CBC, that show households in Halifax spend more of their pre-tax income on housing and transportation.
In 2024, Toronto households spent 29.7 per cent of their before-tax income on housing and transportation (20.9 per cent for housing, 8.8 for transportation). In Halifax, it was 30.7 per cent of pre-tax income (18.2 per cent for housing, 12.4 per for transportation).
The stats show that Toronto still costs much more in terms of housing, but Halifax’s pricier transportation make it cost overall more when considering where people live and how they get around.
To make housing more affordable, she said we need better rent control and to make more affordable housing faster than the current rate of the Progressive Conservatives.
Chender also renewed her call for a tenancies enforcement unit to help renters being abused.
