Giant pumpkin racing part of N.S. Thanksgiving tradition

A Nova Scotian Thanksgiving tradition continues this weekend.

The annual Giant Pumpkin Festival and Regatta goes Saturday in Shelburne.

That’s when pumpkins are weighed and hollowed out, then raced in the harbour.

Robin Smith with the Shelburne Events Committee says people visit from all over the province.

“We have some pumpkin paddlers that will come from the Valley as well, and hopefully beyond. We should have between 10-15 pumpkins in the water for the race at 3 p.m,” said Smith.

Weigh-ins begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.

There’s also pumpkin carving, face painting, live entertainment, food vendors and more.

Shelburne took over the event from Windsor four years ago, and Smith says it’s grown every year.

“We still have people from Windsor that come take part. It’s definitely grown from what we can see as a committee and a community.”

Dock Street will be closed to traffic as well as some side streets.

Souwest Nova Transit will be offering shuttle service to the event.
