A citizens committee in the Region of Queens is considering raises for the mayor and councillors as part of an ongoing review of elected officials’ pay.
The five‑member volunteer panel met Friday for the second time and agreed the mayor’s role should be treated as a full‑time position.
Under the proposal, the mayor’s salary would rise from $48,033 to $68,752, aligning it with the current pay in West Hants, which, due to its similar size, was referenced multiple times in the hearing.
The committee discussed raising the annual councillor salary from $24,286 to as high as $41,496, noting the current pay works out to less than minimum wage for a 30‑hour week.
If approved, the proposed increases would cost taxpayers roughly $24 more per year, according to committee estimates.
The group will revisit the issue at its next meeting on February 6.
