2 Shelburne County wardens call wildfire sentencing a ‘difficult chapter closed’

Two Shelburne County wardens say the Barrington Lake wildfire sentencing is another chapter closed.

In a joint-statement, Shelburne warden Penny Smith and Barrington warden Shaun Hatfield say the news may bring back painful memories of the Barrington Lake wildfire.

They say while the municipalities weren’t involved in the legal proceedings, it marks the conclusion of a difficult time for the community.

Twenty-three-year-old Dalton Clark Stewart of Villagedale was fined $25,000 on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to one charge under the Forests Act.

Smith and Hatfield say their thoughts remain with everyone who experienced loss, displacement and hardship.

They add their focus remains on recovery, healing and building greater resilience for the future.
