Local Food Funding Program to Help Farmers Grow Businesses

New funding for farmers in Nova Scotia to help grow their businesses.

The Local Food Advancer Program is to help large-scale farms invest in new technology and equipment to add new crops and develop new products.

“The food produced in Nova Scotia is second to none, and we want to see more of it on kitchen tables across the province,” said Agriculture Minister Greg Morrow. “Not only does this program help the government reach its buy-local goals, it also helps build stronger, more sustainable farms in rural Nova Scotia.”

Funding through the Local Food Advancer Program covers up to 40 per cent of a project’s eligible costs, to a maximum of $400,000.

The $1.5-million fund is part of the government’s $7.9-million investment, announced in December, to help local farmers grow more value-added local food.

To quality for the program, farmers must show how they will make more healthy, local food.

February 28 is the last day to apply for registered farmers 19 years and older, who’s businesses make more than $1 million in annual sales.
