Canadian Taxpayers Federation opposes MP pay hike

MPs will take home more pay next month.

A pay hike kicks in on April 1st.

Franco Terrazzano, the federal director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, says notes this will be the fourth increase in MP pay since the start of the pandemic.

“We estimate this year MPPs pay increase will range from an extra $5,100 for backbench MPs all the way to an extra $10,000 for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,” says Terrazzano.

Terrazzano notes backbenchers currently collect an annual salary of $189,500, while the Prime Minister earns $379,000.

“MPs don’t reserve another raise. And MPs don’t need another raise from their constituents who are struggling to feel the recipes especially don’t deserve when they make life unaffordable with tax hikes.”

Terrazzano notes increases in the carbon tax and alcohol tax take effect on the same day MPs get the raise.

The carbon tax will increase to fourteen cents per leader of gasoline and twelve cents per cubic meter of natural gas.

Alcohol taxes will go up 6.3 per cent.

The federation is calling on the federal government to freeze MP pay.

The last time MP pay was frozen was from 2010 to 2013 by the Stephen Harper government in response to the 2009 recession.
