Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Nova Scotia this evening.
They are forecasting 30 to 70mm of rain and they say that umber could get higher as thunderstorms pass over the province. The warning is in effect for Western and Central Nova Scotia, with rain beginning in the West and reaching central by midnight.
Officials are warning that e torrential downpouring may cause flash floods in some areas and localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts.
It’s only been a couple of weeks since flash floods decimated much of Nova Scotia and claimed the lives of four people including two children. The Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office provided the following information to ensure people are as prepared as they can be, should flooding occur this evening:
Statement from NSEMO:
“Nova Scotia’s Emergency Management Office (NSEMO) is monitoring local weather forecasts which are calling for periods of heavy rain, with embedded thunderstorms, overnight and into Wednesday. As with any storm, being prepared is the best way to minimize the risk of property damage and personal injury. This is especially true in the wake of recent flash flooding events.
Nova Scotians should monitor local weather forecasts for updates and take precautions before the weather hits. This includes:
- having enough food and water for 72 hours
- checking radio batteries, charging mobile phones and other devices
- clearing and securing rain gutters and downspouts
- sealing basement windows and doors
- installing a sump pump
- checking your insurance coverage
When flooding occurs, don’t cross flooded areas, and avoid rivers/streams.”
