Minister Allan McMaster says housing crisis not a quick fix, makes plea to developers

With the kickoff of the fall legislature, housing remains a hot topic. The entre province is dealing with a crisis.

Our newsroom spoke with MLA and Minister of Finance and Treasury Board Allan MacMaster. He says the crisis didn’t happen overnight and it’s not a quick fix either. He says for the past two years his government has put millions into rent supplements and recently new government housing, which he said is the first time it’s been done to any degree since 1995.

The government will create 222 rent-geared-to-income units that will be built all over the province including Bridgewater, Kentville, Truro, and multiple sites in Cape Breton and HRM that will service over 500 people.

In addition to the government housing, he said they have also put money into fixing existing housing. However, it is a big issue, and they can’t fix it alone.

“I will say this, I have made a personal plea vocally to developers, if anyone is interested… I want to make sure they are aware of programs available right now to build affordable housing,” MacMaster said.
