First Camp Hope for young sexual abuse survivors and families

Brigadoon Village and the RCMP have launched a sanctuary of healing for child and youth survivors of sexual abuse in Nova Scotia.

The inaugural three-day Camp Hope was held in Aylesford at Canada’s largest pediatric medical camp facility September 29th to October 1st.

Cpl. Mark Sobieraj, an investigator with the RCMP Major Crime Unit initiated the camp’s creation.

Sobierag says the vision was to “take a trauma- informed approach to healing and recovery.

To give kids who have gone through so much the opportunity to just be kids again; to learn, heal, and build self-confidence through play.”

While campers engaged in activities with Brigadoon Village staff, caregivers participated in education sessions facilitated by the Avalon Sexual Assault Centre, Provincial Victim Services and the Survivors of Abuse Recovering Society
