The view of Lunenburg Harbour Saturday morning was right out of the golden days of the age of sail.
Three tall ships, Lunenburg’s own Bluenose II and Picton Castle as well as the American clipper Pride of Baltimore began their voyage to the Great Lakes.
The three ships will will spend the summer there as part of the Tall Ships Challenge.

Chief Operations Officer with Picton Castle, Maggie Ostler says this voyage will be a different experience for the crew.
“They look forward to meeting the crew of the other ships and getting to sail as part of a fleet because that’s not something we do a whole lot. We’re usually on our own and you feel like you’re the only person in the world who does what you do.”
Ostler says sailing on these historic ships is a unique experience.
“It’s really neat to be able to share that common experience and to find other people who are just as passionate and nerdy about it as you are.”
Ostler is anticipating the ships will be greeted by huge crowds as they visit ports throughout the Great Lakes this summer.
She says Picton Castle will return to Lunenburg in September in time to host their land-based Bos’n school.
