Mahone Bay: Bell Tower, Library To Be Dedicated To Former Mayor Joe Feeney

The memory of a former mayor will be enshrined at the Mahone Bay Centre.

A fundraising campaign recently started to have the bell tower and library named after C. Joseph Feeney.

He served on Mahone Bay town council for over 30 years including 26 as mayor.

He was also a mentor and educator before he passed away in 2017.

Joe Feeney, son and town councillor, says the family is excited and appreciative.

“It’s a wonderful recognition of his lifelong support to the community.”

Money donated towards the bell tower and library is being matched by the Lunenburg County Community Fund.

Feeney believes his father would be modestly embarrassed but proud of the recognition.

“I think that the bell tower has a lot of symbolism for me personally and I think for the town as a whole. It’s really a beacon for the community, especially at night when it’s illuminated. He personally thought of Mahone Bay as a beacon for the South Shore.”

The goal is to raise $25,000 for the tower, library and to help other capital projects in the centre.
