Churchill critical on timing of Pallet shelters

Nova Scotia’s Liberal leader says government needs to act fast on shelters for the homeless.

The province announced that 19 Pallet shelters will be installed in the HRM.

Zach Churchill says people are struggling.

“We’ve got people living out in the cold, and because this government delayed taking action, we probably won’t have these things in place until the winter is over,” said Churchill.

The province announced the shelters would arrive in late January, and the first Pallet Village will be located at Beacon House in Lower Sackville.

They’ll have to be assembled, get connected with power and water and have fencing built.

Churchill is also concerned there were no shelters announced for his riding of Yarmouth, or Southwestern Nova Scotia.

“There’s no plan for assistance for homeless folks in the Tri-Counties. We’ve got people living in tents in Yarmouth right now, and many rural areas in Nova Scotia.”

The province announced that they’ll have an additional 50 shelters outside the HRM by March.

Those locations include Sydney and Kentville.

The Province purchased 200 units from Pallet.
