Black Bear Activity Leaves Keji Seaside Park Closed For Canada Day Weekend

A local park is closing its gates for the long weekend after an increase of black bear activity has been noticed in the area.

In a release Friday, Parks Canada Nova Scotia said Kejimkujik Seaside Park will be closed from Saturday, June 29 to Monday, July 1, to allow the bears to move through the area uninterrupted.

In the bulletin, Parks Canada said the activity increase is not unusual, and that the park closure was a precautionary measure to reduce human-bear encounters, and to keep visitors safe.

The seaside park will remain open to visitors until 5 PM today, but a list of guidelines have been issued for visitors to follow to ensure a safe trip, including travelling in pack of at least three, not bringing pets to the park, using noise makers during their visit and carrying bear spray.

Parks Canada said they will continue to monitor the situation, and a to be determined reopening date of Tuesday, July 2, was listed.
