Bridgewater Fireworks Dowsed Due To Weather

Canada Day revellers in Bridgewater were disappointed not to see fireworks last night.

Forecasted high winds caused fire officials to call them off.

Some took to social media to complain the decision put a damper on festivities.

Mayor David Mitchell says that decision had to made well in advance as the fireworks take four hours to set up.

“People need to remember that these aren’t fireworks you can buy at the local store. These are technically pyrotechnics. So there’s a lot of risk that they have to make sure they mitigate.’

Mitchell says some people assume town staff are responsible for running the Canada Day celebrations.

But he points out there are teams of volunteers who make it happen.

“And they’re just as disappointed as everyone else is when it’s not a perfect sunny day and everything goes off without a hitch. And that also means they’re just as heartbroken when they read comments from people who are hurtful towards them.”

Mitchell says it’s disappointing when citizens lash out at the people trying to bring the community together.

The mayor says the town will get a credit from the fireworks supplier which will be applied to Christmas on the LaHave or next year’s Canada Day Celebrations.
