A new pilot project is hoping to give women and other gender-oppressed individuals an outlet to grieve.
With funding from the Lunenburg Community Health Board, Second Story Women’s Centre is holding a grief support group to help individuals in the Bridgewater, New Germany area deal with the loss of a loved one.
Aliyyah Fazil, grief coordinator for Second Story, said the group will focus on peer support and the understanding that grieving is different for everyone.
“The understanding behind it is grieving is an individual process, and everyone grieves differently,” she said.
“We hope what people take away from this is what you are going through isn’t necessarily the same as what someone else is going through, and it is really important we understand that.”
One thing the group will help participants deal with is how to cope with the changes of being alone.
“We will talk about the little things that maybe we wouldn’t think of if we lost a partner,” said Fazil.
“You know, how do you go to the grocery store, or how do you make a meal that isn’t for two or three people, but instead is just for yourself now.”
Group sessions will take place every Friday from Aug. 16 to Sept. 20, at the Sobeys community room in Bridgewater, and registration closes Aug. 1. Anyone interested in participating in the group is asked to contact Aliyyah Fazil at aliyyah@secstory.com or by calling Second Story Women’s Centre.
