Nearly One Third of Trees Planted For Mahone Bay’s Centennial

The goal of planting 100 trees in recognition of Mahone Bay’s centennial is moving right along.

To date, 29 trees have been planted.

Mayor Dave Devenne says people can plant a tree on their own property or contact town hall to use public land.

“And when the tree gets planted they register that with the town and they receive recognition for their effort and also a numbered pin in recognition of that person’s participation.”

Devenne says the tree planting initiative was delayed due to a slow start to the season and recent hot weather.

The first one was an oak tree and it was planted in Jubilee Park.

Devenne says trees are one of the keys to dealing with greenhouse gases.

“They do consume and convert carbon naturally and in spite of the fact that we’re surrounded by trees, the notion was that you can always use more.”

The town was incorporated March 31, 1919.

Devenne says it is their hope to have all 100 trees planted by the end of next March.
