School Clean Up, Bridgewater Wastewater Projects Receive Funding

Federal and provincial governments are investing $4.8 million in Lunenburg County infrastructure.

The feds are contributing $2.6 million while the province is covering the remaining $2.2 million on two projects, the remediation of the former Riverport School site and upgrading two wastewater treatment plants in Bridgewater

Minister for Rural Economic Development Bernadette Jordan says these projects are possible when municipal, provincial and federal governments work together.

“We know how important it is to the Town of Bridgewater for the wastewater program as well as for the municipality for the remediation of the Riverport School. They couldn’t do it alone, or they could, but it would take a lot longer.”

MLA for Lunenburg West Mark Furey sees this funding as an extension of a project already undertaken by the Lunenburg Municipality.

“This is the town’s contribution really, to the clean up of the LaHave River. It’s a project that was prioritized by the province. [We’re] very pleased that we were able to engage our federal colleagues.”

Bridgewater Mayor David Mitchell says the wastewater treatment upgrades can’t happen soon enough.

“My goal is to take a dip in the river in two years.”

Mitchell anticipates the design portion of the project will take place this winter with construction getting underway sometime in the new year.

Mayor of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg Carolyn Bolivar-Getson says they don’t yet have plans for the Riverport School site.

“But it will be returned to a site where it will be able to house whatever infrastructure needs or wants are for that area.”

Bolivar-Getson expects to see remediation work begin in 2020.
