An acre of land was burned by fire near Western Shore Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters from Chester, Chester Basin, Martin’s River, Mahone Bay and Oakhill were called to Vaughan’s Lake around 1:45 p.m.
A DNR helicopter also helped dump water on the flames.
Western Shore Deputy Chief, Jared Swinemar, says quick response helped limit the fire’s reach.
“It actually burned in between two camps and we did a perimeter in between the two camps. Within another hour, we would’ve lost the two camps.”
Swinemar suggests the probable cause of the fire was someone burning or a disregarded cigarette butt from a vehicle or ATV.
A province-wide fire ban was in effect at the time and Swinemar says no one should be burning.
“It could have been very serious. The quick response from us and DNR. The only reason the fire was spotted was because of a small aircraft.”
Fire fighters were on scene last night and again this morning to dump water on the site.
