Another Smell Has Lunenburg Residents Turning Up Their Noses

It appears something still smells foul in Lunenburg.

The town office has received several complaints from residents.

Jennifer MacQuarrie has lived at the Blue Rocks end of town on Pelham Street for the past four years.

She says her family has never noticed any issues until recently.

“In the past two weeks it’s almost like clockwork. Around 10-10:30 we start getting hit with harbour-nasty poopy smells.”

MacQuarrie is aware of previous odour problems in the town.

“Up around the Dufferin Street, residents, they used to have a lot of problems in the evening when the waste plant was off-gassing but I’ve heard that is smelling a lot better. But I’m just wondering why we’re smelling it now up in our end of town.”

MacQuarrie is curious to know if the changes that solved the problem for one end of town may have led to problems on another.

The town is taking action to eliminate the unpleasant odours.

Crews are flushing catch basins through out the community.

CAO Bea Renton says odour is being released from below the sewer grates into the atmosphere

“It’s as simple as that. And then when we can come out and flush them quickly with clean water then it can help clean out the pipes down below and the odour dissipates very quickly.”

Renton says that problem rears it’s head from time to time.

“This hot, dry weather, there is a tendency that the catch basins can dry out. So if residents let us know if and where they’re experiencing an issue, we will go out and flush those catch basins.”

Renton says work crews will continue to flush the pipes on a regular basis until the odour is gone.

She says this issue is completely unrelated to the wastewater treatment plant.

And the bio-filter that is in place is working well to manage the smell in that area.
