New Protective Fire Gear Approved by Lunenburg Council

Firefighters in Lunenburg can expect new personal protective equipment in the not so distant future.

Town council approved the Lunenburg and District Fire Department’s proposed tender award from Nova Fire Equipment Ltd. and Micmac Fire and Safety Ltd. for nearly $115,000.

Chief Darren Romkey says the equipment falls under the national fire protection agency standard.

He says roughly 35 sets of gear are due to be replaced.

“Full personal protective equipment for each firefighter includes the helmet, the jacket, pants, boots, gloves, hoods. All together it costs us about $2,500 to $3,000 to outfit one firefighter.”

Romkey says he’s hopeful the gear will arrive by the end of the year.

The cost is covered by the Town of Lunenburg, the District 1 and 2 fire commissions and the provincial emergency responder fund.
