Food Safety And Proper Generator Use A Concern During Outage, Says EMO

As many South Shore residents remain without power, the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office is reminding people to be cautious when dealing with the power outage.

With food safety now becoming a concern as many households are approaching more than 48 hours without power, in a release EMO recommends using perishable food as soon as possible, and says foods that are visibly frozen and under 4 degrees Celsius are safe to refreeze or cook.

NS Power is still reporting over 200,000 Nova Scotians without power following Hurricane Dorian, and crews are out across the province working to restore power.

Bell has also dispatched technicians to get Internet and telephone services back up and running.

EMO says many have taken to using generators or bbqs during the outage, but stresses they should not be used inside, as doing so could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning or death regardless of having windows or doors open.

Many fire halls and recreation centres have opened their doors for residents looking for water, charging stations and even showers. Known centres around Lunenburg County are at the Lunenburg Fire Hall, Lunenburg County YMCA and a comfort centre set up in Hebbs Cross.

To find a comfort centre in your area, EMO says to call 211.
