Gaff Point Reopens After Three Week Closure

Gaff Point is no longer feeling the effects of Hurricane Dorian.

The trail reopened after a crew of volunteers removed downed trees and reformed damaged trails throughout the area caused by the storm.

Doug van Hemessen, Nova Scotia Stewardship Coordinator for Nature Conservancy of Canada, says parts of the coastal trail were reformed further back after high waves damaged around 25 metres of the original path.

Volunteers from the Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy and the Nova Scotia Nature Trust joined members of the Nature Conservancy of Canada to clear out damage to Gaff Point.

“We were lucky in that where that happened, it kind of lent itself fairly easily, we didn’t have to do a lot of clearing to create a new stretch of trail,” he said.

Around 70-80 trees were downed along the trail and required a chainsaw to cut up and remove.

Van Hemessen says the trail still needs some cleaning up, but is safe and walk-able for Fall hikers to enjoy.
