Changes are coming for Lunenburg’s municipal government in 2020.
Mayor Rachel Bailey announced Friday she will not be re-offering for a third term as mayor in next October’s election.
Bailey said she feels its time to let the people of Lunenburg choose a new leader and is hoping her announcement will push others to put their bid in for mayor.
“I thought by making the announcement with a generous amount of time that it may get some people really thinking about the potential they may have to offer to the town,” she said.
Bailey started her career as mayor in 2012 after beating Ron Stockton in the polls, becoming the first woman elected into the position. She was subsequently re-elected in 2016 for a second term.
She said she takes pride in the opportunity she’s had to bring changes to the town but feels its time to move on.
She also shared a bit of advice for the next person to step into what is a heavily scrutinized role.
“As long as your eye is always on what is ultimately in the best interest of all the citizens in the town, you’ll end up on the right side of the community by doing that,” she said.
Bailey intends to finish her term as mayor with the same passion she’s always had.
As for the future, she doesn’t have any plans as of yet.
