South Shore youth are taking to the streets in support of climate change.
The Nova Scotia Youth for Climate Action are hosting a climate strike in Bridgewater in alliance with the global Friday’s For Future initiative.
Rowan Helmer, organizer of the strike, said action among youth has ramped up over the last year out of fear for the future.
“It shouldn’t really be in our hands, but it kind of is in a way,” she said.
“Its our futures that are going to be impacted the most by climate change, which is why its really important to educate ourselves and fight for our futures.”
She said not only youth should be fighting for climate action, but everyone, and invites anyone who wants to see change to strike with them.
The group has held numerous strikes in the area already and have met with both municipal and provincial leaders in hopes of getting them to declare a Climate Emergency.
Rowan Helmer, organizer of the strike, said the support from both political officials and the public have been great, but more can still be done.
“It’s up to the politicians to create the big change,” she said.
“In all reality, the most that we can do is raise awareness on our part.”
The strike will begin on Friday, Nov. 29 at 1 pm in Pijinuiskaq park.
