Turkey Donations Needed For Annual Christmas Hampers

A local community outreach organization is putting the call out for turkey donations.

The Lunenburg County Salvation Army is in need of turkeys for their annual Christmas Hampers.

Major Wilson Sutton said each year they receive plenty of turkeys to hand out to those less fortunate.

But with only a week left, he is worried there won’t be enough for everyone.

“As of yesterday, I counted about 25 turkeys, but we’re needing about 150,” he said.

“We are about 125 turkeys short right now, and I am a little worried about that getting this close to our hamper date.”

Sutton says they have until the 19th to get as many turkeys as they can. At that time, they will start distributing their hampers.

He said having enough turkeys is of the utmost importance, as a lot of families in need rely on them.

“These turkeys are used to give to families who are less fortunate at Christmas,” he said.

“Plus we will give them a hamper full of all the fixings and stuff needed to make a Christmas dinner that they may not have been able to make themselves. So these turkeys are part of helping someone who may not have been able to have a Christmas dinner in the first place.”

Sutton asks that anyone who could donate a turkey do so by dropping it off at either Gows Home Hardware on High Street, or at the Salvation Army Thrift Store.
