It’s almost time. Only a few more days to go.
Many have already removed all signs of Christmas and are ready to move on with the new year.
I was brought up that way. By New Year’s Day the tree was gone, ornaments packed and all signs of the holidays were gone. Then, I got married.
My wife had always left her tree up until Old Christmas. The twelfth day. January 6th. That was how she rolled.
Now, I will admit, I like having the tree around, so there was never an argument. An extra few days were no problem.
Except we rarely asked the tree. Some years the tree simply did not drink enough. Or we forgot to give it enough to drink. Needles would be everywhere. The tree may officially leave on January 6th, but memories of it lingered for weeks, even months to come.
I started to balk a bit at the January 6th thing, thinking we should maybe leave it up to the tree to decide when it should depart, but Old Christmas won out.
