A listener sent us their dilemma:
My best friend and her family live in a somewhat overcrowded apartment with a million dollar view. All of the family are art lovers and every available space is taken up with their collection. Two years ago I took a photo from their balcony and commissioned an up and coming local artist to paint a landscape of it and gave it to them a year ago at Christmas. When I was visiting them over the holidays I didn’t see it and asked where it was. She told me it’s wrapped up in a box under the bed because they don’t have the wall space for it. I have to agree with them on that point because I could see that with my own eyes so I think they appreciated the gift.
Since they’re not using it, I’d like to offer to pay whatever they think they’d be comfortable with to buy it from them. Would this be rude or put them in an uncomfortable spot?
