Northern Pulp Continues Shutdown Process With Layoffs

Salaried employees at Northern Pulp will begin receiving layoff letters today.

Following the mill’s announcement it would be shutting down due to the denial of its requested Boat Harbour Act extension, the company began its wind down process earlier this month.

In a release, the company says they are handing out layoff notices to its salaried staff starting today, with most of its 90 salaried employees expected to be laid off within the next few months.

They say the earlier layoffs would be effective Jan. 31, and is expecting only 20 per cent of its workforce to report for work as of Feb. 1 to help with the shutdown process of the mill.

Northern Pulp says it has taken steps to support its employees affected by the closure by offering transfers to other mills owned by their parent company, Paper Excellence Canada.
