Town Holding Public Engagement Event On Future Of Decommissioned Arena

The Town of Bridgewater is taking a look at future uses of the Bridgewater Memorial Arena.

They are looking for public input on a proposed renovation plan for the facility, and will be holding a special Talk Bridgewater open house to discuss its future.

Decommissioned in 2015, the arena had all of its ice-making equipment removed and has since served as a storage facility for the town’s Parks department.

Patrick Hirtle, communications for the town, said the proposal would see the facility continue to be used as a storage facility for parks, but also include space for public use.

“The public use aspects that are being considered include the potential for the conversion of the auditorium space upstairs into a performing arts venue,” he said.

“The main floor downstairs as well, we also have a number of different things that are on the table for that space.”

It would also provide a meeting space for the parks department, as well as a storage depot for the Bridgewater Transit bus.

Hirtle said there will also be online public engagement, which will be put together with results from the meeting and will help the town decide on the outcome of this project.

“The results of all this will be shared with town council and will be used to help inform council’s decision-making process for this year,” he said.

“That is ultimately the goal is council wants to have a good feel for what the community thinks of the proposal.”

The open house meeting will be held at The Living Room at South Shore Centre Thursday, January 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
