The Halifax Mooseheads will be without their captain for the rest of the season.
Jake Furlong will undergo shoulder surgery, as the Mooseheads get set for their playoff series against Acadie-Bathurst.
Local sports broadcaster Mavs Gillis says it’s a tough blow.
“It’s tough to see their captain out, especially against a team that matches up really well against Halifax,” said Gillis.
He says the Titan were a tough team to beat for Halifax this season, and he expects a great series.
“Bathurst has a good top line and solid goaltending. But if Mooseheads goalie Mathis Rousseau plays the way he did last year in the playoffs, he’ll always give Halifax a great chance to win.”
It opens Friday night at Scotiabank Centre.
Halifax went to the final last year against Quebec, losing in six games.
Meanwhile, the Cape Breton Eagles hope to stay hot heading into playoffs.
They’ve won nine straight games, and will take on Rimouski in the first round, starting at home Friday night.
Gillis says the Eagles were really impressive in the second half.
“They’re one of the biggest teams in the league, and they have the most experience. The community is really behind them in Cape Breton, they’re going to have a ‘white-out’ in the stands.”
The Eagles have not won a playoff series since 2019.
