New Municipal Building On Schedule To Open

The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg’s new office is still on schedule despite COVID-19.

Progress hasn’t been halted due to the pandemic, and crews are continuing to work on the interior installations.

MODL communications officer Sarah Kucharski says the new building will be a much needed upgrade.

“The new building is going to have a lot of accessibility features, All washrooms will be accessible and the whole building will be accessible for all staff and customers,” she said.

“We are also going to have a better system in council chambers, so in the future we could do a better mix of in-council and virtual meetings that we just can’t do with our current setup.”

Space and accessibility are two important factors for the new building, as their current facility is lacking in both departments.

“We had a lot of problems where people would want to come in and do business with the building inspector or drop off a development permit,” said Kucharski, “But they couldn’t navigate the stairs at the back, so we would sometimes end up serving customers outside. That is just not acceptable in this day and age.”

The municipality is hoping to have an update on when the building will be wrapped up next week, but are still aiming for a late summer, early fall opening, pending any incidents or delays.

“We’re looking at probably September for our best guess right now,” said Kucharski.

“It’s challenging, you just never know what can come up with a large scale construction project like this.”
