A group of Park View Educational Centre students are taking a hike for charity next week.
Students Adam Culbert, Finn Kimball, Drew Bolivar and Callum Corkum will make the 28 kilometer trek from home to school Monday for their Dirt Brothers Charity Walk.
The group are hoping to raise money for the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg’s PRO Kids program, which helps kids remove the financial barrier of participating in recreational sports.
Culbert says everyone in the group are athletes, and when the idea came up, they felt helping others enter the sports world without worry was the right choice.
“Sports have been a big part of our lives growing up, so we wanted to help all kids get the chance to play and participate,” he said.
The fundraising initiative couldn’t have come at a better time either, as Tissy Bolivar, Program Coordinator for MODL PRO Kids said the program has seen an increase in applications, but a drop in donations due to COVID-19.
“It is fantastic that a group of youth are taking the initiative to raise funds for any charity, and the fact that they have chosen PRO Kids is great.”
To bring a bit of notoriety to the charity walk, the group have named the event after their lawn mowing and apparel company.
“The Dirt Brothers started out as a lawn mowing business my brother and I began about six years ago,” said Kimball.
“We mow lawns between West Dublin and Green Bay and we’ve always had hats and a logo for the business. The feedback on our hats was so great, my friends and I decided to start an apparel side to the business. Now we sell hats and t-shirts and we’re hoping to move into hoodies as well.”
The four have set up a GoFundMe page to take donations with a goal of $1,000, however they have since surpassed that amount.
They are set to make the journey to their school on foot Monday morning with a rain date of the following Friday, and all donations will be presented to PRO Kids at a later date.
