Last night the Junos celebrated Canadian music with an awards show for the 50th year.
There were many talked about performances and even though the traditional partying could not happen, there was still a sense of celebration in the air for sure.
A number of winners were not logged in for last night’s event, but there were some highlights for sure.
After starting on a sombre note with Buffy Sainte-Marie opening the show by addressing the recent discovery of the remains of 215 children buried at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.
The 50th anniversary show played catch up from last year’s event being cancelled and finally Jann Arden was welcomed to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame from the East Coast. Anne Murray did the honors from her East Coast retirement home.
There was another big thing that happened connected to our coast, the Maritimes had TWO WINNERS!
Two East Coast musicians — Halifax’s Bahamas and P.E.I.’s Rose Cousins — won Juno awards this weekend.
Bahamas, also known as Afie Jurvanen, won the best adult alternative album of the year for Sad Hunk, while Cousins won the best contemporary roots album of the year for Bravado.
So happy to see a couple awards make their way to this side of the country. Here is the complete winners list:
Here are all the 2021 Juno Award winners
By next year hopefully things will be back to normal and if that happens, the plan is for the Juno weekend to happen in Toronto.
This week and weekend we are getting ready to celebrate East Coast Music with the ECMA’s, virtual from Sydney, Cape Breton. Get all the details at ecma.com
