Police were cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the death of a man who died in hospital after police held him in a cell.
Halifax Regional Police contacted the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT)about the incident on Dec. 14, 2023, according to a news release.
Police had arrested the man following an home invasion and assault the day before.
“The male was monitored in cells according to police policy,” the release says.
However, while in his cell, the man attempted suicide. Police provided first aid and called an ambulance. He was taken to hospital. On Dec 15, 2023, after doctors ceased medical intervention, the man died, SiRT says.
SiRT operates under a civilian director and investigates injuries and potentially criminal incidents involving police in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
