Seagulls that were rescued in Yarmouth are doing well at Hope for Wildlife.
A team of volunteers transported seven of the birds last Thursday, as they were covered in animal waste.
The birds were found near Short Beach by a couple from Tusket, and had gotten into the waste off a truck from a nearby rendering facility.
Hope Swinimer, founder of Hope for Wildlife says four of the seagulls have been washed.
“The remaining gulls will probably be washed closer to the end of the week. It will take a little bit longer for them to get stronger for the wash. It takes a lot out of them and it’s really hard on them.”
Swinimer says the waste is not toxic to the birds, so they have more time to recover.
She says the seagulls are still inside, and they’ll be adjusted to an outdoor facility over the next few weeks.
Swinimer says she’s amazed at how so many people came together to help.
“It was a three-way relay. Each drove about an hour and a half. From the time we were aware of the seagulls until the time they got here, it was about five hours. A great job to everyone who helped out, from Yarmouth to Halifax.”
