Those staying in the Veteran’s Unit at Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital are now able to enjoy being out in the community in their new bus.
The new bus was funded by the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore after learning the old bus was outdated and in need of repair.
Health Services Foundation Manager of Strategic Engagement, Alison Clements said the new bus provides the unit’s resident with a better way to travel and more space to accommodate those in wheelchairs.
“We have to remember that the veterans are older and a bit more frail and they want a comfortable ride,” explained Clements. “This bus is more comfortable to get around in.”
She said the bus is used as a safe way to transport residents to appointments, activities and allow them to visit family and pets they may have had to leave behind.
“It’s really meant for a tool so that out veterans who really fought for our country can freely move around the community,” said Clements.
Clements said the total cost of the new bus was around $110,000.
She added that over $44,000 of that money was raised through donations to the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore’s West Nova Fuels Curl for a Cause event, which was held virtually this year due to COVID-19.
