Cornwallis Street in Bridgewater is set to get a new name and the Town’s Heritage Advisory Committee is seeking suggestions.
Bridgewater Town Council voted to rename the street earlier this year so the name is not assumed to commemorate Edward Cornwallis, who was associated with the British government’s colonial actions against the Mi’kmaq, and other indigenous people.
Council voted to amend the Naming of Streets Policy last month as the previous policy was deemed outdated.
The newly revised Street Naming and Renaming Policy does not allow street names that are commemorative of an individual or group.
After the survey closes, selected names will be recommend to Council for the replacement of Cornwallis.
Council will have the final say on the selection of the replacement name.
Residents of Bridgewater can submit name suggestions until January 7th, 2022 by clicking HERE.
