Premier open to meeting with local wine industry

The province will head back to the table with local grape growers.

Nova Scotia’s wine industry rejected an offer for $1.6 million more in funding, saying it doesn’t go far enough to address their needs.

The proposal also includes a subsidy for commercial wine bottlers, who are able to import grape juice at less cost.

Premier Tim Houston says he’s open to meeting again.

“I’ve met with them before, there have been a lot of departmental staff meeting with them as well. I’m absolutely willing to meet with them,” said Houston after cabinet Thursday.

Houston says the industry has a lot of potential for everyone, and it’s important to the province.

“It’s incredibly important, as is every industry to the province. We’ll continue the discussions and see where it goes.”
