Grand opening of renewed StFX Amelia Saputo Centre Friday

You’ll soon have a chance to check out the newly renovated Amelia Saputo Centre for Healthy Living at St Francis Xavier University in Antigonish.

Home of the X-Men and Women, the former Oland Centre was built in 1967. It is also the primary facility for StFX recreation programs, intramurals and the Human Kinetics Department.

The athletic and recreation spaces have been undergoing a multi-phased facility renewal project, with the first phase completed in 2017.

A grand opening, which will include tours, is set for 3:30 p.m. Friday. Among the guests will be the Saputo family, who donated $10 million to the project. The former chancellor of StFX, John Peacock is also slated to attend.

In a release, the university says, “The $30 million dollar renovated complex enhances healthy living, not only for StFX students, but for the entire surrounding community.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on campus outside the front entrance of the Amelia Saputo Centre for Healthy Living next to the Charles V. Keating Centre. If it rains, the event will be held in the auxiliary gym.
